Lottas - A really nice English style pub which serves amazing food. The clientele are a bit more mature shall we say but the atmosphere is always great. There is a huge selection of beer and spirits from around the world. The food is "gastropub" in nature, the menu is translated into English but it is quite expensive.
Rex - By day a fine dining restaurant with a menu to match, by night a roaring nightclub on 3 floors. There is a menu in English on the website and a 3 course dinner will cost you around 500 sek. There is a lot of traditional Swedish dishes to try. There is a tariff to get into the club/pub at night but if you want to dance away the night it is great and well worth it.
Pipes - Pipes is the slightly younger, slightly cheaper version on Lotta's! The beer choices are more limited and the food cheaper and they do an after work special which I am told is pretty good. There is often live music on a Friday or Saturday night and there is a music quiz weekly.
The Bishop's Arms - This is a chain pub and you can find them in a number of cities. It again has an English theme and serves great quality food. The selection is good and there is a menu online to wet your appetite - check out the Full English Brunch Platter!
Balder - More restaurant than pub but you can go there to just have a drink if you want to. The food is of a good standard and cheap, in Swedish terms. There is not a huge selection of drinks and sometimes the menu can be limiting. They serve both a taco and a full buffet which are all you can eat. In my experience the desserts haven't been great, so maybe get some ice cream on the way home!
Droskan - Great restaurant, that once again turns into a club on occasions. At Droskan you can have either a Taco or a Full buffet and the food is really good. You can opt to have a drink buffet to go with your dinner where you can refill your soda as many times as you like! They have a number of theme nights and live music events and if it is a special occasion you might want to consider booking a table.
Mix - If you want a decent Italian style dinner somewhere out of town then Mix is a great option. With huge portions, reasonable prices and plenty of free parking just outside it is well worth the trip to Mariedal. They also do take out pizzas which are very tasty!
Eastern Palace - This is my favourite place to go for a Chinese buffet. Eat all you can from a variety of chinese dishes for a very reasonable price.
Max & Frasses - Sweden's home grown answer to McDonald's and Burger King. Slightly different in style and everyone secretly prefers one or the other! Burgers are usually sold as dinners including french fries and a drink.
Eurasia - Another Chinese restaurant, with more of a traditional menu system, the food is great and it is usually pretty busy there.
Viktor - One of the most exclusive places to eat in Umeå with a price list to match. I have never been fortunate enough to go but if money is no object and you are passionate about fine dining, it doesn't get much finer than this!
Tre Kronor - In my opinion, the best pizza in town. Cheap and always tasty. They also do a pizza buffet where you can eat all you can.

Taco Buffet - With a taco buffet at restaurants you are allowed to eat as much as you can from the taco stand. This usually incorporates, mince, taco shells, salad, fajita chicken, soft taco breads, nacho cheese etc. This is often the cheapest buffet option.
Full buffet - With the full buffet you are entitled to eat from every stand you can see! So there is usually a taco stand, sometimes pizzas and invariably a meat section. Here you will find, potatoes (often as gratin), pork, chicken etc. If you go to somewhere like Droscan often the meat will be very Northern Sweden in nature so involve some Moose, game, deer etc. This is the most expensive buffet option.
Coffee - A lot of Swedish eating places include free coffee at the end of the meal, especially if in a buffet environment. This is even true at Burger joints like Max!
