Childish humour – Willys, plopp…I mean COME ON!

As you might have gathered by now I am a HUGE fan of Sweden, Swedes and all things Swedish. There are some things that never ever ever fail to make me smile and anyone who is a native English speaker, ideally from the UK, and have even an ounce of an inner 7 year old left within them will hopefully join me in a stifled snigger at some of the following!

Willy:s
I kid you not, it is not uncommon to be walking round and see people passing you by with carrier bags with Willys written all over it! People calmly and seriously talk about the dire need to go to Willys! You get flyers through your door offering Willys special offers! It is everywhere!! It is of course a Supermarket chain – oh yes, not a word of a lie!

Plopp
You go to a supermarket, fancy spoiling yourself with a little chocolate, do you go for Marabou, Snickers, Twix…nah I think you should have a PLOPP! Seriously! I think I want a job coming up with names like this! It is actually a really nice chocolate bar with creamy caramel in the centre! My partner thought I was weird for ages seeing as I giggled every time I saw the chocolate bars, eventually I explained that plopp in the UK usually means poop and all became clear – I guess some things aren’t taught in high school English classes!

Sniggering yet?! Maybe this well help…

Pucko
Ok, on the face of it seems fine, a lovely chocolate milk drink. Just another brand name you might think…that is if you don’t know any Swedish. What they don’t tell us foreigners is that Pucko is also the widely used equivalent of calling someone an idiot, numnut, fool, dumba**…you get the image! I think it was named so shop assistants could be amused when non-Swedes are sent into the store by their Swedish friends to ask where the Pucko is kept ;)

Utfart
Now I am possibly showing QUITE how childish my humour can be but this is something that you see a lot and I cannot help but at least smile! They are just pointing you to the exit with these signs, especially seen around petrol stations etc. There is a slightly less common and painfully sounding INFART sign too, which if course refers to the entrance! What more can I say?!

OK so I hope that has brought at least a small smile to your day, I know it has to mine! If you happen to spot any other amusing names, brands etc that are perfectly normal in everyday Swedish life but are hilarious to an English speaker please leave your comments here!

Vi ses snart!
